World War IIDS Tejo
The Norwegian DS Tejo was en route from Oporto to Belfast with a cargo of wine when the vessel was attacked and sunk by German aircraft on 9 February 1941 in position 35°42’N 14°38’W. The aircraft first strafed the ship with machine-gun fire before dropping two bombs. The bridge deck and everything above it was blown apart, and a fire broke out. All lifeboats were destroyed, and the survivors gathered on the forecastle. Three men had jumped overboard. The survivors were soon picked up by a British destroyer. Four men were lost in the sinking; they are believed to have been in the blast zone and were likely killed instantly.
