World War IIDS Thode Fagelund
The SS Thode Fagelund was torpedoed on November 17, 1941, by the Vichy-French U-boat Le Heros and sank near Cape Town, South Africa. The vessel was en route from Madras to Cape Town with scrap iron, jute, and tea. One of the lifeboats reached Kidds Beach near East London later that evening. The individuals aboard the second officer’s lifeboat were found by a boat sent from East London. The sailors from the other two lifeboats were picked up by the SS Nahoon and were likely landed in Port Elizabeth.
