World War IIDS Thyra
The DS Thyra was en route in convoy from Clyde to Canada when, on 27 May 1941, it collided with the escort vessel HMS Leamington at position 52°25’N and 19°22’W, causing Thyra to sink. Leamington survived the collision with damage to its stern and a water-filled forecastle. The escort vessel rescued the survivors from the Norwegian ship and continued with the convoy. Four of Thyra‘s crew perished in the sinking, along with a Norwegian chief engineer who was aboard as a passenger.
