World War IIMS Vigrid
MV Vigrid was on a journey in an east going convoy to the Great Britain with 10 American Red Cross sisters as passengers. Vigrid had some engine malfunctions and were left alone in the wake of the convoy. Approximately ten German U-boats had tried to catch this convoy but instead found Vigrid. The ship was torpedoed on the 24th of June 1941 by the German U-boat U-371 i the approximate position 54N, 38W. Vigrid sank quickly, but four lifeboats managed to be lowered down to the water, and the 47 crew members and passengers boarded the lifeboats. Two boats headed for Greenland and the other two headed for Ireland. The east going boat disappeared underway, but the other boat was rescued on the 17th of July and brought to shore at the same day in Londonderry. The two north going boats kept up with each other, but a storm and rough seas made this journey a nightmare. One of these boats disappeared. 11 days after the shipwreck was one of the lifeboats with 14 extremely fatigued passengers saved by an American naval vessel. 27 people perished in the sinking, of those were four american nurses, three Brits and a czechoslovak.
