World War IIDS Wilford
SS Wilford was on a journey from Mombasa to Lourenzo Marques in ballast. On the 7th of June 1942, the ship was sank by artillery fire by the Japanese U-boat I-18 in position 2027S, 3637E. Two lifeboats and a dinghy carried in total 35 crew-members, whereas five were Norwegian and the rest Chinese. One of the lifeboats drifted for a day until it was found by a british ship, while the other lifeboat reached land South of Beira. The two crew-members in the dinghy were found by a Portuguese gunboat. The Captain, Second officer along with seven of the Chinese crew perished in the sinking.
