World War IIDT Davanger
ST Davanger was on a journey in convoy from Curacao to Liverpool with almost 10.000 tons of fuel oil. On the 11th of October 1940 the ship was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-48, during a southwards storm and rough seas, in position 57N, 1910W. Four men managed to lower down the portside lifeboat, but had to quickly push away from the ship side and cut the line so that they would not be crushed. The four managed to rescue eight crew members which had jumped overboard, but in the darkness, it was impossible to see if there were any others, as they could not hear any shouts for help. The surviving crew members in the lifeboat concluded that the others had died when the explosion happened. 16 Norwegians and a British gunner passed away. The 12 survivors in the lifeboat arrived on the 18th of October Broadhaven in Ireland. They were all severely exhausted and were hospitalized.
