World War IIDT Malmanger
The DT Malmanger was en route from Port of Spain, Trinidad, to French Guinea when it was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-130 on 9 August 1942 at position 07°13’N and 26°30’W. The captain and the first engineer were taken aboard the U-boat as prisoners. Two lifeboats set sail for Africa. One of the lifeboats reached Vichy-controlled French West Africa, where the 16 men aboard were interned. Gunner John Østebø managed to escape after some time and eventually turned up in Freetown. There, he was given passage to the United Kingdom aboard the SS Ocean Courage. However, that ship was torpedoed on 15 January 1943, and Østebø perished in the sinking. The second lifeboat with 14 men was rescued. Two men were lost in the torpedoing.
