The DT Moira was en route from New Orleans to Vera Cruz, Mexico, when it was torpedoed on 17 June 1942 by the German U-boat U-158 off Port Isabel, Texas. After the crew had boarded the lifeboats, the U-boat fired 36 shells into Moira, and the ship sank. On 18 June, the lifeboats were spotted by a fishing trawler and brought to Port Isabel.
