World War IIDS N.T. Nielsen-Alonso
The floating whaling factory SS N.T. Nielsen-Alonso was en route in convoy from the United Kingdom to New York in ballast. On February 22, 1943, the vessel was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-92 at position 48°00’N and 34°00’W. N.T. Nielsen-Alonso was struck by several torpedoes, but it took a long time for the ship to sink. Three of the engine crew perished. The rest of the crew escaped into lifeboats and, a couple of hours later, witnessed a final torpedo from U-753 strike the ship. The wreck would not sink, but the damage was so extensive that it was deemed pointless to board the vessel again. Fifty men in four lifeboats were rescued by a Polish escort ship, which then delivered the final blow to the wreck.
