World War IIDS Pelagos

The floating whaling factory DS Pelagos was captured on 13 January 1941 by the German commerce raider HSK Pinguin in the Southern Ocean. The crew and vessel were sent to Bordeaux, France, under German command. The ship was used as a supply vessel for German U-boats in France and later in Norway. On 24 October 1944, the vessel was abandoned and scuttled by the Germans off Kirkenes. It was salvaged after the war and continued as a whaling factory until it was scrapped in 1962.
