World War IIDS Skytteren
The whale factory ship DS Skytteren was one of the “Kvarstad ships” that had been interned in Gothenburg after 9 April 1940. On 31 March 1942, Skytteren broke the Swedish internment, along with ten other ships, and headed for the United Kingdom. The following day, the ship was intercepted by German patrol boats halfway between Skagen and Kristiansand. Skytteren turned back toward Sweden but was attacked with gunfire and forced to stop. The crew then detonated explosives aboard the ship and abandoned ship in the lifeboats. The entire crew was captured and ended up in German internment camps and later prisons.
