World War IIMS Balkis

MV Balkis was on a journey from Halifax to Buenos Aires, carrying 2.500 ton of paper and wood pulp. On the 10th of April 1942, the vessel was torpedoed by the Italian submarine, Piedero Calvi, 60 nautical miles by Fortaleza by the coast of Brazil. Afterwards, the submarine opened fire against the vessel with cannons. Four men on board were killed, while a Norwegian stewardess and a Chilean crew member drowned when one of the lifeboats capsized. After half an hour, Balkis sunk. The crew had managed to readied two boats. On the 12th of April, the survivors were picked up by a Swedish ship and brought to Fortaleza.
