World War IIMS Bayard
The MS Bayard was en route from New Orleans to Cristobal with general cargo when it was torpedoed on 6 July 1942 by the German U-boat U-67, just 40 nautical miles off the coast near the Mississippi Delta. No one expected U-boats to attack this close to shore. Bayard sank within 10 minutes. Eleven lives were lost in the sinking. Several of the survivors were critically injured and required medical treatment, which they received. An American seaplane landed about an hour later and transported the injured to New Orleans.
