World War IIMS Braganza

The MS Braganza was en route from Montevideo to Freetown and the United Kingdom with general cargo. On October 12, 1944, at position 34S and 52W, and in winds reaching up to a light storm, a fire broke out in the engine room. The flames rapidly spread to the oil tanks, and ammunition stored on the deck began to ignite. The midsection of the ship was completely engulfed in flames, and the 50-man crew abandoned ship in three lifeboats. The crew sailed towards Brazil. Two of the lifeboats reached Rio Grande, while in the third boat, two crew members and one passenger died from injuries and hardships. The deceased were buried at sea. On October 18, the survivors were taken aboard an Argentine ship.
