World War IIMV Donerail

The Panamanian-registered MV Donerail (formerly the Danish Nordhval) was torpedoed on 9 December 1941 by the Japanese U-boat I-10 off the coast of Hawaii. Norwegian Lars Martin Handeland escaped in a lifeboat along with the captain and 22 men. The captain later drowned, and fourteen of the crew, including Handeland, died in the lifeboats, partly from exhaustion and partly from gunshot wounds. Only eight men reached land on Tarawa after a 38-day voyage. Twenty-seven crew members, including ten Norwegians, perished in the sinking, along with seven passengers.
