World War IIMS Eli

MV Eli was on a journey from Clyde to London, carrying 7022 ton steel from Philadelphia. On the 10th of September 1940, the vessel was attacked by a German airplanes with bombs and machineguns 12 nautical miles from Skerryvore. The airplanes scored a hit and the ship sank quickly. Many of the crew-members jumped overboard and were taken by the undertow.There were several badly wounded, but only one a carpenter and a British gunner died later from wounds at a hospital in Stornoway.
