World War IIMS Hai Hing

MV Hai Hing was on a journey from Bombay to Durban loaded with 1.400 tons of general cargo. During the journey Hai Hing got orders sent by telegraph to travel to Lourenzo Marques. This order was most likely sent so that the ships in the area could travel in convoy since there has been a lot of submarine attacks in the area. MS. Hai Hing changed its course, but was torpedoed the 4th of November 1942 by a German U178 Submarine six nautical miles from Imjack lighthouse close by Lourenzo Marques. The ship sank immediately. Five Norwegians, one Brit and 19 Chinese died. Meanwhile three Norwegians, eight Brits and 31 Chinese managed to hold onto debris and rafts and was saved by a tugboat that was notified by the crew at Imjack lighthouse.
