World War IIMS Karmt
The MS Karmt anchored in The Downs after a voyage from Lagos, carrying 7,500 tons of peanuts, palm oil, and general cargo, before continuing to Antwerp the following day. On April 18, 1945, the vessel joined a convoy.
That same day, Karmt was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-245 in position 2 nautical miles off Dover. The explosion was violent, and three lifeboats were launched. The vessel sank in position 207 degrees off the North Goodwin Vessel, 2 nautical miles from shore.
Four Norwegian engine crew members and a Belgian mine pilot were killed instantly. Several other crew members were also injured.
