World War IIMS Leif
MV Leif was on a journey from the Dominican Republic to New York carrying general cargo. On the 28th of February 1942, the vessel was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-653 east of Cape Hatteras in the position 3445N, 6920W. All men boarded the two lifeboats. The two lifeboats had maintained contact till the afternoon on the same day. One of the lifeboats carried 10 men. Two days later, the boats were observed by a Swedish ship and brought to Key West. For a long time, there was a hope of hearing from the other lifeboat carrying 15 men, however, this never happened.
