World War IIMS Norne

The Norwegian MS Norne was sailing in convoy from Wilmington, N.C., USA, to Grangemouth with a cargo of scrap iron when the vessel was torpedoed on 30 August 1940 by the German U-boat U-32 in position 58°48’N 06°49’W, north of the Hebrides. The same U-boat had torpedoed three ships within 14 minutes. The crew rushed to the lifeboats, but Norne sank during the launch. The lifeboats were crushed, and all those on deck were pulled under by the suction. Only 11 men resurfaced. Clinging to debris, they were quickly rescued by a British escort vessel. Seventeen men were lost in the sinking, and eleven were saved.
