World War IIMS Oregon Express
MS Oregon Express was en route in a westbound convoy to Halifax in ballast when it was torpedoed on September 23, 1943, by the German U-boat U-238, five days out of Halifax. All the rescue equipment amidships was destroyed, and those in that area had to swim. Two lifeboats at the stern were launched, and in a sea of oil and debris, the lifeboats found 25 men, with 11 more rescued from a raft. All were quickly picked up by a British ship. Seven people went down with the vessel, including a female passenger. Several of the survivors were severely injured. Six days later, upon arrival in Halifax, they were taken to the hospital. Electrician Halvan Arthur Stoltenberg died on June 12, 1943, at sea from illness.
