World War IIMS Randsfjord
The Norwegian MS Randsfjord was sailing in convoy from New York to Liverpool with 6,740 tons of general cargo, including 77 tons of ammunition and 33 aircraft. The convoy came under U-boat attack and was scattered. On 22 June 1940, Randsfjord was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-30 70 nautical miles south of Fastnet. The vessel sank immediately, and the crew had only enough time to cut the falls on the lifeboats. From the lifeboats, several men were pulled from the sea, and a search was made for three missing crew members, but without success. The U-boat surfaced alongside the lifeboats, and its commander asked the usual questions. Afterwards, he handed over a bottle of brandy and some water. The survivors were rescued two days later and taken to Glasgow. Three men were lost in the sinking.
