World War IIMS Santos
MS Santos was en route in convoy from New York to Mersey. On August 18, 1943, the ship was repeatedly rammed by an American vessel in thick fog. The American ship had been torpedoed, was on fire, and out of control. In the fog, the same ship collided again with Santos, causing another hole in the ship’s side. Santos began taking on water, and all hands were ordered into the lifeboats. Two men went missing, and no signs of life were seen among the wreckage. Santos sank at position 43°51’N and 53°12’W. The following day, the lifeboats were spotted, and the survivors were rescued by two corvettes. Two British crew members perished in the sinking.
