World War IIDS Selje

The Norwegian DS Selje was in Rotterdam for the installation of German anti-aircraft guns when it departed on 15 May 1942, loaded with coal and coke, with a crew of 40 Norwegians and 22 Germans. The ship was part of a German convoy with three other vessels and eight escort ships. The convoy was attacked by Allied aircraft northeast of Terschelling. The attack came in two waves, and Selje was hit. During the same attack, three of the ship’s four lifeboats were destroyed.

Selje was taken in tow, but it began to list more and more, eventually capsizing. The vessel sank on 16 May 1942 off the island of Ameland in North Holland. Fifteen Norwegians were killed, including two who were trapped in a cabin, and five who perished due to the rapid capsizing. There were no German casualties.
