World War IIMS Siljestad
The MS Siljestad was en route from New York to Alexandria with general cargo and war materials when it was torpedoed on 15 May 1942 by the German U-boat U-156 at position 15°20’N and 52°40’W, about 420 nautical miles north of Barbados. Two men drowned while attempting to abandon ship. Thirty-one men gathered in two lifeboats. The U-boat surfaced, asked questions, and gave the survivors the course to Barbados. The next morning, they were rescued by the Yugoslavian ship Kupa. On the same day, Kupa was also torpedoed, but all aboard were rescued into lifeboats and made it to land. One lifeboat from Siljestad and Kupa‘s boats reached Venezuela and Barbados, respectively, after a 10-day journey.
