World War IIMS Sørholt

The MS Sørholt was en route from Buenos Aires to New York when it was torpedoed on 15 September 1942 by the German U-boat U-515 at position 10°45’N and 60°00’W. Two torpedoes were fired. One struck the engine room, killing three men, while the other detonated in the cargo hold, which contained ammunition, causing an explosion. Both guns were blown loose, and one gunner was killed, while three men perished in their cabins when they were unable to escape. One of the lifeboats was filled with water and drifted with three men aboard. Ten men boarded the dinghy, and eight men managed to launch a raft. The survivors eventually gathered in the lifeboat and rescued six men from the sea. A third torpedo hit the ship, sinking it. The U-boat surfaced, apologized for the sinking, and handed over some canned goods and cigarettes. Thirty-one survivors reached Port of Spain the following day. Seven men perished in the sinking.
