World War IIMS Tarifa

MS Tarifa was on a solo voyage from Aden to Melbourne, carrying 8,000 tons of phosphate, 500 bags of mail, and 102 military passengers. On March 7, 1944, the ship was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-510 at position 12°48’N and 58°44’E. The engine was immediately stopped, and all hands were ordered into the lifeboats. All survivors were gathered in five lifeboats, each towing a raft. The progress was slow, and it was decided that one boat should seek land as quickly as possible and then call for help. On March 12, the captain’s boat reached the airbase on Sokotra, and by March 14, all the remaining survivors were safely aboard an escort vessel. Two Norwegians and one British crew member perished in the sinking.
