World War IIMS Vestvard
The Norwegian MS Vestvard was en route from Liverpool to Montreal in ballast. The vessel was lying alone approximately 350 nautical miles west of Ireland, awaiting a convoy, when it was struck by two torpedoes from the German U-boat U-31 on 27 September 1940. Twenty-eight crew members and one Norwegian passenger took to the lifeboats and landed near Slane Head Lighthouse on 1 October. One person was lost, and four were taken to hospital in Galway.
