The Norwegian MS Vestvard was en route from Liverpool to Montreal in ballast. The vessel was lying alone approximately 350 nautical miles west of Ireland, awaiting a convoy, when it was struck by two torpedoes from the German U-boat U-31 on 27 September 1940.
