MT B. P. Newton was on the 3rd of July 1943 on a journey in convoy from Trinidad to East London with a full cargo load of gasoline. On the 8th of July 1943, the ship was torpedoed by a the German uboat U-510 in the position 0550N, 5020W, outside Paramaribo, Brazil. Burning gasoline has sprayed all over the afterbody and the bridge. The crew jumped for the lifeboats, but the wires carrying the lifeboats went ablaze and within seconds they would break and the lifeboats were lost. All the machinists lost their lives with no chance of stopping the machines. The crew of the amidships sought refuge on the forecastle, while two men of the amidships managed to release a lifeboat into the waters. Four men jumped from the forecastle and swam towards the lifeboat. 12 men, whom were minor or majorly burned, were rescued from the waters. 24 men were saved by the escort, while 23 perished in the sinking. The surviving crew was brought to Pernambuco.
