World War IIMT Barbro
MT Barbro was on a journey in convoy from Halifax to Liverpool full of gasoline. The convoy consisted of 66 merchant ships. The convoy was observed by a German U-boat south east of Greenland and was attacked by five U-boats. At the 19th of September 1941 MT Barbro was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-552 in the position 6130N, 3507W. The tanker and the water around it was immediately engulfed in flames. Another Norwegian boat, SS Carrier, was close by and from MT Barbro one could observe the tankers crew run away from the flames in fear. It was tough to not to be able to help them. Several of the crew dived off the ship, but the ocean was aflame as well so there was no chance of survival. The escort ships also made an attempt to get close to the raging flames but to no avail. The entire crew on MT Barbro, 22 Norwegians, three Swedes, one Dane, five Britons and four Canadians perished in the sinking.
