World War IIMT Bello

MT Bello was on a journey in ballast in a convoy from Glasgow to New York along with 42 other ships. The convoy was attacked by four U-boats and on the 16th of December 1942, the Bello was torpedoed, possibly, by the German uboat U-610  in position 5145N, 2350W. The ship sank so quickly that the crew had to be ordered to board the rafts. Of the nine men on the amidships and on the deck, seven of them managed to reach the rafts and a lifeboat. Most of the crew behind the ship were believed to have died immediately, likewise for the cannon crew. Approximately an hour later eight men were rescued by a corvette. 28 Norwegians and five Britons perished in the sinking.
