World War IIMT Beth
The MT Beth was en route from Port of Spain to Freetown with a cargo of oil when it was torpedoed on 17 May 1942 by the German U-boat U-162 at position 13N and 57W, near Barbados. A massive explosion occurred, and oil sprayed across the entire ship. The crew managed to abandon ship in three lifeboats. A second torpedo struck Beth, and flames reached mast height, with thick black smoke rising into the air, as Beth sank. The U-boat surfaced to ask questions and offer assistance, but the survivors did not require help. Two of the lifeboats with 21 men reached Barbados after 36 hours. The third boat with nine men landed on Tobago on 20 May. Two men perished when the boats were launched into the water.
