World War IIMT Glittre
MT Glittre was en route in convoy from the United Kingdom to New York in ballast. The convoy was attacked for four days by up to 18 German U-boats. Glittre was torpedoed on February 22, 1943, by the German U-boat U-628 at position 47°11’N and 35°35’W. The torpedo exploded in the engine room, killing two engineers on watch and the cook, whose cabin was near the engine room. Glittre sank slowly, and when the stern was at water level, the survivors launched the lifeboats. The vessel was hit by two more torpedoes before it sank. The survivors were rescued by an escort vessel.
