World War IIMT Havsten

The MT Havsten was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-160 on 3 August 1942 at position 10°25’N, 56°00’W. The torpedo struck the stern, killing the second engineer. The U-boat surfaced and subjected the ship to cannon fire, which soon resulted in a fierce fire in the forward section. The U-boat steered towards the lifeboats and captured Captain Gjert Olsen and a British telegraphist. The captain eventually returned to Norway. Havsten remained afloat for several days but was finally sunk by the Italian U-boat Tazzoli. The lifeboats reached land on 14 August. One man perished in the sinking.
