World War IIMT Leiesten
MT Leiesten was torpedoed on the 23rd of January 1942 by a German U-boat U-82 in position 5427N, 4319W. An explosion came from the aft which killed the chief machinist and four other machinists. The uboat emerged from the water and opened fire, and the ship sank. While Leiesten was under fire a British mess boy was killed. The crew members who dove into the sea managed to board a float, others had boarded a lifeboat, and in total they were 29 people. they were rescued by a Greek vessel after 32 hours. 6 of the crew perished in the sinking.
