World War IIMT O.A. Knudsen
MT O. A. Knudsen was on a journey, loaded with gasoline and oil, from Port Arthur to Liverpool. On the 5th of March 1942, the ship was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-128 in position 2617, 7550W, east of Abaco in the Bahamas. The tanker stayed afloat even though it was hit by two torpedoes. The U-boat returned at night and opened fire with their cannon and the ship sank in the morning. Five men were wounded by fragments when they rushed into the motor lifeboat. The tanker was shortly after engulfed in flames. The survivors were brought to Abaca Island. It was here that the sailor Olaus Martin Edvard Johannessen died on March 10th of the wounds he received during the attack.
