World War IIMT Spinanger
The MT Spinanger was loaded and en route off Halifax when it sailed into British waters. On 4 January 1945, the vessel was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-1172, approximately 1 nautical mile from Clyde Light Vessel in the North Channel. Spinanger was struck in the engine room, instantly killing three engineers and injuring several others. A British rescue boat soon arrived and took aboard the injured crew members.
The vessel was later taken in tow by a tugboat and brought safely into port. Spinanger was repaired and remained in regular service until being scrapped in 1960.
