World War IIMT Storaas

MT Storaas was en route in convoy from Simonstown to Abadan in ballast when, on May 28, 1943, the ship was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-177 on the same day it left Simonstown. Two torpedoes struck the engine room. The tanker stopped immediately but did not sink right away. The wreck was abandoned, but one man was trapped in the engine room, surrounded by darkness, water, and oil pouring down on him. He managed to free himself and reached the deck one hour after the torpedoing. While he remained there, two more torpedoes detonated in the hull. The man managed to get a dinghy, rowed away as the water reached the deck, and was picked up the following day and brought to Cape Town. Five men perished in the torpedoing.
