World War IIMT Vardefjell
MT Vardefjell was on a journey from Clyde to North Africa loaded with oil. On the 13th of December 1942, the ship broke in half during stormy weather. The foreship section drifted off and disappeared along with 12 men, which all perished. The 29 men at the aft confirmed that the bulkhead behind the breaking point was sealed, so that the rest of Vardefjell could be maneuvered and sailed with a careful use of the engine. It must be characterized as outstanding seamanship that this succeeded. On Christmas Eve 1942 some fishermen in Våg, Faeroe islands, a half tanker sailing towards them, and they assisted it to shore. After closer inspection, it was concluded that the ship had been under a great deal of stress and pressure to keep up with the rest of the convoy in the heavy weather they were experiencing.
