World War IIMT Vinga
The MT Vinga was in convoy but lagged behind when, on 15 September 1941, it was attacked by German bombers at position 54°801’N and 13°20’W. Two bombs struck amidships, killing eight men and severely injuring four. A British destroyer arrived and rescued 33 survivors. When it became clear that Vinga would remain afloat, four volunteers boarded the ship to receive the tow from a tugboat. The ship stayed afloat and was successfully towed safely to land in Rothesay. MT Vinga was repaired and continued its service until it was scrapped in 1954.
