World War IISS El Lago
The Panamanian-registered SS El Lago was torpedoed on 11 October 1942 by the German U-boat U-615. The vessel was en route from Reykjavik to New York in ballast. Fifty-seven lives were lost, and two persons were rescued by the U-boat and taken into German captivity. The other survivors were left on their lifeboats.
