World War IIDS Gudveig
The DS Gudveig (formerly Robert Mærsk) was en route from Tyne to Bergen with a cargo of coal when it was torpedoed on 25 January 1940 by the German U-boat U-19, approximately 37 nautical miles north of Newcastle, off Langstone Lightship. The vessel sank within seconds, and 10 men lost their lives in the attack. Eight survivors were rescued and brought ashore in Methil.
