World War IISS Plaudit

The Panamanian-registered SS Plaudit was torpedoed on 8 November 1942 by the German U-boat U-181. The vessel was en route from Colombo, Ceylon, to New York via Cape Town, carrying 1,075 tons of rubber, 400 live monkeys, 5,000 tons of jute, 400 tons of tea, and 1,000 tons of magnesium. Four lives were lost, and forty-six persons were rescued.
