World War IISS Raceland
The Panamanian-registered SS Raceland was engaged in traffic between the United States and Murmansk, carrying various war materials, when it was attacked by German aircraft off North Cape and bombed to the bottom on 28 March 1942. A lifeboat with 18 men was found and brought to Kvaløy, where Second Officer Johansen died shortly afterward.
