World War IISS Thomas Ruffin
The American SS Thomas Ruffin was torpedoed on 9 March 1943 by the German U-boat U-510 off the coast of Trinidad. The vessel was en route from Suez, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, and Bahia, Brazil, to Georgetown, British Guiana, in ballast. Six lives were lost, and fifty-two persons were rescued.
