World War IISS Empire Endurance
The DS Alster was part of the German invasion fleet to Norway on 9 April 1940. On 10 April, the German ship was captured by a British destroyer in the Vestfjorden near Bodø. Shortly thereafter, it was ordered to sail to the United Kingdom but was attacked by German aircraft in the harbor of Harstad. During the bombing, Norwegian stoker Kvalnes was severely injured and later succumbed to his wounds. The ship was renamed SS Empire Endurance. On 20 April 1941, the vessel was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-73 in the Atlantic Ocean.
