World War IIDS Annavore

SS Annavore was torpedoed 21 December 1941 by German U-boat U-567 in position 4355N, 1950W approximately 500 nautical miles west for Cape Finisterre. The ship was in a convoy from Huelva via Gibraltar to Aberdeen loaded with 4800 tons of iron ore. The ship went underwater with its bow and in under a minute the ship stood vertically up from the waters and sank immediately. Only two sailors and two from the engine crew survived. They said that while they were in the waters they could hear the shouts of other crew members and could see their lights from the life jackets. A corvette came to the site and started rescuing people, but they only found four people in the waters. 27 Norwegians, six Britons and an American died. Two of the deceased were passengers.
