Eight men were killed and many were wounded in the explosion. Later a man died on one of the lifeboats. Two more boats were lowered to the waters. A new torpedo then sunk the ship. The U-boat came to surface, asked questions and then threw three boxes with bread and a bottle of rum to one of the lifeboats.
