World War IIDS Balder

The Norwegian DS Balder operated in British coastal traffic in the early stages of the war. On 14 July 1940, the vessel was attacked by ten German aircraft with machine-gun fire and bombs. One bomb struck the stern, setting the ship on fire. Four men manning the gun were killed, and five others were wounded. The 14 survivors were transferred to the Norwegian motor torpedo boat MTB 5. A British tug later took Balder in tow to Dover, where she was repaired and continued her voyage. On 25 July 1940, the ship was attacked again by German aircraft but escaped without damage. The vessel was broken up in 1956.
