World War IIDS Bollsta
SS Bollsta was docked in Bari harbour, Italy with supplies for the allied forces. On the 2nd of December 1943 the Bollsta, along with many other ships, recieved a concentrated German air attack which caused the sinking of the ship. The entire crew got to the shore, but many of them were heavily wounded. They got the best treatment that was possible at the given time, but the life of six men were lost. Along with Bollsta a tanker got hit and oil and gasoline were lit and spread like a wildfire on the entire harbor. A vessel carrying poisonous gas, cracked and leaked the content over the area. Lifeboats and rafts from 17 ships fought hard to get to shore through fire and flames and poisoned air. Over 1000 got killed, either on the deck or in the hospitals, most of the killed were sailors. After the war Bollsta was raised and put in service with italian owners until the ship was scrapped in 1969.
